Shapewear Size Guide: How to Measure Yourself and Find the Perfect Fit

If shapewear has ever felt uncomfortable, rolled down, dug in, or just didn't work, there's a very good chance it wasn't a quality issue. It was a sizing issue.

Getting the wrong size is the most common reason shapewear fails. Too small and it creates bulges, restricts breathing, and becomes unwearable within an hour. Too large and it rolls, shifts, and provides none of the smoothing it promised.

Here's exactly how to measure yourself, what numbers to look for, and how to choose the right size every time.

Why sizing matters more for shapewear than regular clothing

Regular clothing sizing has some flexibility. You can often go up or down a size and still get a reasonable fit. Shapewear is different.

Shapewear is designed to apply specific levels of compression across specific body areas. When the garment is the right size, that compression is distributed evenly and comfortably. When it's off, even by one size, the compression falls in the wrong places and causes discomfort, visible lines, and zero shaping benefit.

Shapewear sizing also doesn't always match your dress size. Many brands size their shapewear differently from standard clothing. This is why taking your own measurements matters: don't rely on "I'm usually a medium" when shopping for shapewear.

What you'll need

  • A soft measuring tape (the kind used for sewing, not a metal ruler)
  • A mirror, or someone to help
  • Fitted underwear or nothing (avoid measuring over thick clothing)
  • A pen and paper to record your numbers

How to take your measurements

1. Waist measurement

Find your natural waist, which is the narrowest part of your torso, usually about an inch above your belly button. It's not where your trousers sit. It's the actual narrowest point of your midsection.

Wrap the tape measure around this point horizontally, keeping it parallel to the floor. It should be snug but not pulled tight: you should be able to breathe normally. Note the measurement in inches or centimetres.

Common mistake: Measuring at the hips or trouser waistline instead of the true natural waist. This gives an incorrect measurement and leads to poor fit.

2. Hip measurement

Stand with your feet together. Find the fullest part of your hips and backside, usually about 7-9 inches below your natural waist, though this varies by body.

Wrap the tape around this fullest point, keeping it level and parallel to the floor. Don't pull it tight. Let it sit comfortably across the widest area. Record this number.

Common mistake: Measuring too high (at the hip bone) rather than at the actual fullest point of the bottom. This underestimates the hip measurement and results in shapewear that's too tight across the seat.

3. Bust measurement (for full-body shapers and bodysuits)

Wearing an unpadded bra or no bra, wrap the tape measure around the fullest part of your chest, across your nipple line. Keep the tape parallel to the floor and snug but not compressing. Record this number.

If you're buying a bodysuit or full-length shaper, you may also need your underbust measurement (just below the breasts) to determine band size compatibility.

4. Torso length (for full-body garments)

For bodysuits and full-body shapers, torso length matters. Measure from the top of your shoulder, down over your bust, stomach, and through to your crotch. This determines whether a garment will sit correctly without riding up or pulling down.

If you have a longer torso than average, look for brands that offer tall sizing or extra-long bodysuits. Otherwise even the right size can pull uncomfortably.

Reading the size chart

Every shapewear brand has its own size chart. Always use the brand's chart, not a generic size guide. Most charts list measurements in both inches and centimetres and show which size corresponds to which measurement range.

When your measurements fall between two sizes:

  • If your waist fits one size but your hips fit a larger size, go with the larger size. Shapewear that's too small across the hips will roll down and bunch.
  • If you're between sizes and want more compression, go with the smaller size, but only if it fits across your hips and you can breathe comfortably.
  • If you're between sizes and prioritise comfort, go with the larger size. It will still smooth and shape, just with lighter compression.

Common sizing mistakes to avoid

Buying a size down to get "more shaping." This is the most common mistake. Going smaller than your correct size doesn't increase shaping. It creates uncomfortable pressure, restricts circulation, and causes the garment to roll or dig in. Always size for your actual measurements.

Using your dress size instead of your measurements. Dress sizes vary widely between brands and countries. Centimetres and inches don't lie. Always measure first.

Ignoring the torso length. If a bodysuit is pulling in the crotch area or riding up, it's too short in the torso, not too tight. Check whether the brand offers a longer torso option.

Not accounting for how the garment is worn. Some shapewear (especially high-waist styles) sits above your natural waist. If the waistband hits higher than your measurement point, you may need to adjust your size selection accordingly.

Measuring over clothes. Even a thin layer adds half an inch or more to your measurements. Always measure on bare skin or fitted underwear for accuracy.

HEYSHAPE sizing tips

HEYSHAPE shapewear is designed with a true-to-size fit across a wide range of body shapes. A few things to keep in mind when shopping:

  • Our size chart is based on your actual body measurements, not dress size
  • If you're between sizes, we generally recommend sizing up for comfort
  • Our bodysuits have adjustable straps to accommodate different torso lengths
  • If you have a fuller hip-to-waist ratio, use your hip measurement as your primary guide

Still unsure? We've built a quick size tool that takes your measurements and recommends the right fit for each style.

The right size changes everything

The right-sized shapewear moves with you, stays in place, and disappears under your clothes. The wrong size does none of those things, which is why so many people end up with shapewear they bought once and never wear again.

Take five minutes to measure before you buy. It makes more difference than any feature or fabric claim on the product page.
